Vertex colors: the hidden workhorse of shaders – introduction to realtime lowpoly vertex painting

Vertex painting is a technique widely used by the games industry. From simple texturing to more complex shader effects and optimization, vertex colors are an important tool in every gamedevelopers toolkit. Using artwork from Hotel Hideaway as a case study, this presentation shows how to get started on using vertex colors and offers insights from someone who has worked with them daily in Blender. Jenny Tirkkonen will go through her hard-learned do’s and don’ts from real game production environment and troubleshoots how to solve the most common issues when using vertex-based workflows. The talk first discusses the artistic perspective of painting with vertex colors and then more about their potential in shader building as information maps along with examples.
